South City Academy Mission Statement

Our mission is to support the whole child by focusing on student ownership and high-quality instructional practices. We are committed to providing experiences that require critical thinking, innovation, collaboration, and empathy to empower our students to become community and world leaders.

Pillars of Academic Success

At South City Academy, we focus on four key pillars for personal and academic achievement. WIN Time, Diversity & Inclusion, Family Engagement, and Community Partnerships create a comprehensive support system that nurtures student development and success.

WIN Time: WIN time offers small group, personalized instruction providing intervention and enrichment support to enhance student achievement. For Kindergarten through eighth grade, WIN (What I Need) Time involves assessing students, grouping them based on their specific needs in ELA, Math, and Science, providing targeted enrichment to support their progress.

Diversity & Inclusion: Diversity and inclusion are core values that define our South City Academy community. Our students come from various backgrounds and countries, creating a vibrant tapestry of cultures, perspectives, and experiences. These values are integral to who we are, fostering an environment of respect, acceptance, and belonging. We are committed to nurturing each student’s growth and development, empowering them to embrace their unique identities. At South City Academy, we celebrate diversity, encouraging every student to shine and embracing the sentiment, "Why fit in when you were born to stand out?"

Family Engagement: A strong relationship between South City Academy and our families is key to our students' successful educational journey. We actively foster this relationship throughout the year. Our monthly "Chat N Chew" brings parents together to enjoy dinner, learn from speakers, and gather resources to support their mental and physical health, while their children are engaged in academic activities with teachers.

"I See Me" and "Leyendo Con Familia" blend literacy with family time. These gatherings meet monthly in our cafeterias, allowing our students to read books to their families before school, all while enjoying breakfast together.

Our vibrant festivals and programs, such as our Hispanic Festival in the fall, Black History Program in February, and Spring Festival, are designed not just for students but our entire school community. These engaging events celebrate our diverse heritage and provide informative, enriching experiences for our students and families.

Community Partnerships: South City Academy’s many partnerships are integral to supporting our students, helping them grow and evolve in numerous ways. Through the support of our community partners, students at South City gain access to resources and experiences that foster personal development, academic success, and ensure students are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive as future community leaders. A list of our many partnerships can be found below.

Curriculum Focus

At South City Academy, our curriculum focuses on the core subjects of math, reading, writing, science, and social studies, utilizing innovative programs. We encourage and support a mastery of learning standards via our Vision of Excellent Instruction, Social Emotional-Behavioral Learning, the Rethink Program, and a variety of extracurricular activities. This holistic approach ensures that students not only achieve academic excellence but also develop essential life skills.

Student Ownership: We believe that active participation is crucial for student success. Our students are not just present in the classroom; they are responsible for their learning. We hold them accountable, encourage them to lead data-based conversations, and ensure they are cognitively engaged with their daily work.

Instructional Practices: We provide high-quality learning materials, questions, and tasks that enable all students to master the content. Our resources include My Sci, Eureka Math Squared, CKLA (elementary), My Perspective (middle school), TCI social studies (all grades), and Creative Curriculum (Pre-K).

Social Emotional-Behavioral Learning

Rethink: The Rethink Program helps reinforce socio-emotional learning through Friday Families SEL sessions, providing strategies to support students' overall well-being.

PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports): PBIS is an evidence-based, three-tier framework focused on promoting positive behavior and enhancing school culture. At South City Academy, PBIS is implemented through various initiatives. Students can earn Star Awards for demonstrating key values such as safety, responsibility, readiness, and respect. These awards can be used to make purchases from the Star Cart. Additionally, students have the opportunity to participate in special monthly field trips and are recognized as Star Students of the Month during school assemblies, celebrating their commitment to positive behavior and contributing to a supportive school environment.

Restorative Practices: Restorative Practices empower students to build and maintain relationships, resolve conflicts, and repair any harm to others. These practices create a supportive environment where students learn accountability and empathy.

Extracurricular Activities

Extracurricular activities enrich the educational experience at South City Academy, providing students with opportunities to explore their interests, learn teamwork, and cultivate leadership skills. We offer a wide range of athletics, including Soccer, Basketball, and Track & Field for both girls and boys, as well as Girls Volleyball and Cheerleading. Our diverse clubs, such as Journalism, STEP, Podcast, Gardening, Lego, Robotics, and Social Skills groups (BLOOM & Once Upon a Time), along with Student Council, further enrich our students' school life. These activities promote discipline, physical fitness, and creativity, preparing our students for future success.
